ACT Math · Lesson 45

Practice: Choosing a Route

Forty quick drills on picking hand, handheld, Desmos, or hybrid as the fastest reliable way to attack each kind of ACT Math situation.

Practice: Choosing a Route

These drills ask a different question than the rest of the course. They do not ask for a numeric answer. They ask which route, hand, handheld, Desmos, or hybrid, is the fastest reliable way to handle the situation described. Speed matters here: the goal is recognizing the right tool before you have spent any time solving, not after. None of these require actually working the problem out.

Use the signals from the previous lesson as your guide.

Signals and the routes they favor
Signal in the questionRoute
Simple arithmetic or a short, visible algebraic stepHand
Repeated arithmetic, trig, or statistics computation on known valuesHandheld
Finding an intersection, a root, or a regression line; reading a graph's shapeDesmos
A word problem requiring translation before any calculation beginsHybrid
A conceptual judgment (which theorem, what a study supports, rational or irrational)Hand

Remember that the ACT's embedded Desmos has no matrix mode, and that a calculator route that takes more keystrokes than the mathematics would take by hand has stopped doing its job.

Practice set

Exam mode

Exam mode runs on the clock of the real section and holds the explanations until you submit. You then see your score and an explanation for each question.

  • The exam covers 40 questions.
  • A single timer of 45 min runs for the whole set.

Study mode

Study mode lets you answer each question at your own pace and shows the explanation as soon as you check your answer.

  • The 40 questions appear in a new order each session.
  • The explanation opens when you check each answer.
