How digital SAT scoring works

The digital SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, each scored from 200 to 800. Your total score is the sum of the two, from 400 to 1600. Each section is split into two modules. How you do on the first module decides whether your second module is harder or easier, and that route affects the range of scores you can reach.

The College Board scores the test with item response theory. In plain terms, questions differ in difficulty and in how much they tell the scoring model about your skill, so two students with the same number of correct answers can receive different scores. Each section also includes a few unscored pretest questions. That is why no calculator can convert a raw count into an exact score.

How this estimate works

The calculator uses two simple curves, one for students routed to the harder second module and one for the easier module, built to follow the general shape of results on published practice tests. If you choose “Not sure”, it averages the two curves and widens the range. The range shown is a rough band of about ±40 points per section (±70 if you are unsure of the route). It is not a statistical confidence interval.

For the most realistic picture, use the official practice tests in the College Board's Bluebook app, which report scaled scores directly. Use this calculator for quick checks on other practice material.

SAT score calculator: FAQ

Can you convert SAT raw scores exactly?

No. The digital SAT is adaptive and scored with item response theory, so the score depends on which questions you answered correctly and which second module you received, as well as on how many you got right. Any raw-to-scaled conversion, including this one, is an approximation.

How is the digital SAT scored?

Reading and Writing and Math are each scored from 200 to 800, and the total score is their sum, from 400 to 1600. There is no penalty for wrong answers.

What does the second module do to my score?

Each section has two modules. Your results on the first module determine whether you get a harder or easier second module. The harder route allows higher scores; the easier route has a lower ceiling.

Are all SAT questions scored?

No. Each section includes a small number of unscored pretest questions that look like the others. You cannot tell which ones they are, so answer each question.
