ACT score calculator
By the CollegePrepRoom editorial team · Updated · How we write and check content
Enter how many questions you answered correctly in each section of a practice test. The calculator estimates each 1–36 section score and your composite, and, if you include Science, your STEM score.

How ACT scoring works
Each ACT section is scored on a scale from 1 to 36. Your composite is the average of English, Math and Reading, rounded to the nearest whole number. Science is optional; if you take it, you receive a Science score and a STEM score. Science does not change the composite. The optional writing test is scored separately.
| Section | Questions | In the composite? |
|---|---|---|
| English | 50 | Yes |
| Math | 45 | Yes |
| Reading | 36 | Yes |
| Science (optional) | 40 | No; part of the STEM score |
Raw scores are converted to scale scores with a table made for each test form, so the same number of correct answers can produce slightly different scale scores on different dates.
How this estimate works
The calculator turns the share of questions you answered correctly into a scale score using one approximate curve, built to follow the general shape of published practice-test conversion tables. It then averages English, Math and Reading and rounds the result the way the ACT does. Each section score is shown with a band of about two points either way.
If your practice test came with its own conversion table, use that table, because it is specific to that form.
ACT score calculator: FAQ
How is the ACT composite calculated?
The composite is the average of your English, Math and Reading scale scores, rounded to the nearest whole number, with halves rounded up. Science is optional and is not part of the composite.
What is the ACT STEM score?
If you take Science, you also receive a STEM score, the rounded average of your Math and Science scale scores.
Is there a penalty for guessing on the ACT?
No. Your score is based on the number of questions you answer correctly, so answer each question.
Why is my estimate a range?
Each ACT form has its own conversion from raw scores to scale scores, and some questions may be unscored field-test items. This calculator uses one approximate curve for all sections, so it shows a band of about two points either way.
