Practice Exam 1: Section I (Multiple Choice)
This is a full AP Literature simulation, and Section I is the first half. It contains 55 multiple-choice questions in five passage sets, to be completed in 60 minutes. Take it in one sitting, with a timer, in a quiet room, and with no chapter notes open.
How to run the section
- Do not check answers between sets, and do not go back to Section I once you have started Section II.
- Budget about 11 to 12 minutes per passage set. Read the passage once with the question stems in mind, then answer from the text, not from memory of the chapter.
- Mark a question you cannot settle, choose your best answer, and move on. An unanswered question can never earn a point.
- After Section I ends, take one 10-minute break. Do not score Section I during the break.
What this set tests
The five sets mix prose fiction, drama, and poetry. Questions ask about character, setting, structure, narration, and figurative language, and a few ask for a whole-passage interpretation. The passages are Jane Eyre, Pygmalion, Eveline, We Wear the Mask, and The Lake Isle of Innisfree.
When you score it
Score only after both sections are finished. Each explanation after a question names the deciding evidence and, where the book gives one, the strongest distractor and its failure type: scope, function, degree, inference, precision, or complexity. For every miss, find the decision that failed, not just the right letter. The book does not convert a raw score into an estimated AP score of 1 to 5, because cut scores vary across exam forms and years. Use the two exams to find repeated errors, pacing problems, and whether your corrections hold on new material.
