Estimate your AP English Literature and Composition score

Estimated AP score

4

Weighted composite: 64% of the maximum.

This is an unofficial estimate. It is not a score report, and it does not predict your result.

How the AP English Literature and Composition exam is weighted

  • Section I has 55 multiple-choice questions on poetry and prose passages and counts for 45% of the score.
  • Section II has three essays, each scored on a 6-point rubric, together counting for 55%.
  • Each essay point is worth about 3 percentage points of the composite, so a one-point change on a single essay can matter as much as several multiple-choice questions.

How this estimate works

The calculator converts each part to a share of its maximum, multiplies it by that part's weight, and adds the results to get a weighted composite between 0% and 100%. It then compares the composite with approximate cutoffs for each AP score:

Estimated AP scoreApproximate composite needed
5About 68% or higher
4About 56% or higher
3About 44% or higher
2About 30% or higher
1Below about 30%

These cutoffs are our approximations, informed by the general pattern of scoring information the College Board has released for past exams. Real cutoffs are set each year from that year's results, can move in either direction, and are not published for current exams. Multiple-choice answers are scored only for correct responses; there is no penalty for a wrong answer.

  • Score practice essays with the three rubric rows: thesis (1), evidence and commentary (up to 4) and sophistication (1).
  • If your multiple-choice practice is strong but essay scores vary, compare the estimate with your lowest and highest essay scores to see the range of outcomes.
