AP US Government · Lesson 52

Practice Exam 2: Section I, Multiple Choice

Full-length Section I practice: 55 multiple-choice questions in 80 minutes, with the answer key and rationales.

How to use this exam

This is a full-length Section I of the AP U.S. Government and Politics exam: 55 multiple-choice questions in 80 minutes. That is about 87 seconds per question, so pace yourself by the set rather than by the single item. Work the exam in one sitting, without notes, and without opening the explanations until you have finished.

Directions

  • Some questions stand alone. Others come in sets built around quantitative data (a table), a text source, or a visual source. For a set, read the source first and then answer each attached question.
  • Choose the best answer for every item. There is no penalty for an incorrect guess, so never leave a question blank.
  • The questions run in the order of the five course units: Foundations of American Democracy (Questions 1–10), Interactions Among Branches of Government (11–28), Civil Liberties and Civil Rights (29–36), American Political Ideologies and Beliefs (37–43), and Political Participation (44–55).
  • When time is called, stop and record your time and how many questions you left unanswered or marked for review.

Pacing and strategy

  • On a table or scenario set, spend the first 20 to 30 seconds reading the source and noting what it actually shows before you read the choices.
  • Match the task word. A question that asks what a table supports wants a claim the data show, not one that merely sounds true about government.
  • Eliminate choices that name the wrong institution, the wrong case, or a process unrelated to the scenario. The best answer is usually the one that ties the scenario to the exact concept being tested.
  • Mark any question that costs you more than two minutes, pick your best guess, and return to it only if time remains.

After the exam

Each question below carries the book's answer key and a rationale for the correct choice and for each wrong choice. Do not just check whether you were right. For every miss, name the cause: a content gap, a misread source, a task-word mismatch, or a timing problem. Then return to the relevant chapter and retrieve the idea without notes. Questions you got right by guessing deserve the same review as questions you missed.
