How to Manage the Digital Exam in Real Time

PART IV — FINAL REVIEW · CHAPTER 41

Content knowledge and writing skill only earn points if you can deliver them inside a fixed amount of time on an unfamiliar digital interface. Preparation becomes a completed, submitted response only when the logistics around it are handled just as deliberately.

What to Expect From the Digital Testing Experience

The exam runs entirely inside Bluebook, College Board’s digital testing application. Multiple-choice questions are answered by clicking, and short-answer and essay responses are typed directly into the app rather than written by hand. Spend time before exam day working inside the actual application if it is available for practice, so the interface itself is never something you have to figure out under time pressure.

TIME BUDGET BY SECTION

SECTION	TIME	PACING TARGET
Multiple choice	55 min	About 1 minute per question; flag and move on rather than stalling on one
Short answer	40 min	Roughly 13 minutes per SAQ, including reading the source
Document-based question	60 min	15 minutes reading and planning, 45 minutes writing
Long essay	40 min	5 to 8 minutes planning and sorting evidence, the rest writing

The DBQ and LEQ share a combined Section II time of 1 hour 40 minutes. The 60-minute DBQ figure, including its 15-minute reading period, and the 40-minute LEQ figure are recommended planning targets inside that combined block, not separate hard timers enforced by the app. If you finish one task early, the remaining Section II time can be used on the other.

Set Up Bluebook Before the Clock Starts

Bluebook gives you a section timer and allows movement among questions within the active section or part until time expires. Practice with the official test preview well before exam day so the navigation is familiar. Use the review-flag tool when you want to return to a question, and use the built-in highlighting, notes, or option-elimination tools when they help, but do not turn annotation into another task that consumes time. Scratch paper is still valuable for a DBQ grouping plan, an LEQ evidence sort, and quick chronology checks.

TEST-DAY CHECKLIST

BRING / PREPARE	CURRENT AP GUIDANCE
Device	Use the school-managed device your coordinator assigns, or prepare your personal device if your school permits or requires it. Bluebook should be installed and the device fully charged.
Power	Bring the power cord or a portable charger. Do not assume an outlet will be available.
Writing utensil	Bring a black or dark-blue pen or pencil. The school supplies scratch paper.
Tablet or iPad	An external keyboard is required for fully digital AP exams.
Laptop	An external keyboard is not permitted. An external mouse is allowed.
Photo ID	Required only if you are not testing at the school you regularly attend.
Credentials	Know the College Board account information needed to sign in to Bluebook and complete the in-room check-in.
Reporting time and place	Follow your AP coordinator’s instructions rather than a generic admission-ticket workflow.

Reading Digital Stimulus Material Efficiently

Reading on a screen encourages skimming in a way paper does not. Counter that deliberately: read a stimulus once for what it says, then a second time noting date, author, and purpose before you touch the questions. Use available digital annotation or scratch space actively rather than relying on rereading the source a third time once you have forgotten the details.

Typing Under Time Pressure

Practice typing full-length responses under timed conditions before exam day, not just reading and outlining them. Typing speed and the habit of organizing a response before typing the first sentence both matter more under real time pressure than they do during untimed practice, and both improve with deliberate practice beforehand.

Recovery Habits When a Section Goes Wrong

A blanked fact, a thesis that stops working halfway through a paragraph, or a section that runs short on time all happen even to well-prepared students. When they do, finish a complete, if imperfect, response rather than abandoning it for a stronger one you will not have time to complete. A finished answer that earns partial credit on every component outscores a half-finished answer that would have earned full credit if you had reached the end.

What to Do Once Studying Stops

The day before the exam, follow the instructions from your AP coordinator and make sure the device you are expected to use is ready for Bluebook. If you are using a personal device, install and open Bluebook in advance and confirm that the upcoming exam appears under Your Tests. Charge the device fully and bring its power cord or a portable charger. Bring sharpened pencils or pens for notes on school-provided scratch paper; do not bring your own scratch paper. If you use a tablet or iPad for a fully digital AP exam, an external keyboard is required, though external keyboards are not permitted with a laptop. Bring a photo ID if you are testing at a school you do not regularly attend. Your AP coordinator, not a generic admission ticket, tells you when and where to report.

Prioritize sleep over a final late-night review session; a rested memory retrieves information more reliably than an exhausted one that stayed up cramming an extra hour. Arrive with enough time to get settled without rushing, since walking in flustered costs more focus in the first ten minutes than any last-minute fact would gain back.

Answer without looking back.

MANAGE THE DIGITAL EXAM UNDER REAL TIME PRESSURE

1 Why does practicing inside the actual testing application matter before exam day?

2 List the four exam sections with their time budgets.

3 Describe a reading strategy that counters the tendency to skim on a screen.

4 Why should you practice typing full responses under timed conditions rather than only outlining them?

5 Explain why finishing an imperfect response usually earns more credit than abandoning it for a stronger one you cannot complete.
