Practice Exam 1: Short-Answer, DBQ and Long Essay

Complete the three short-answer questions, the document-based question, and the long essay of AP U.S. History Practice Exam 1, then score yourself with model answers.

Directions and timing

This exam follows the same format, timing, and weighting as the exam described in Chapter 1. This file holds Section I, Part B and all of Section II. Complete it under timed conditions when possible, in the same order and with the same time limits as the real exam.

  • Section I, Part B: three short-answer questions, 40 minutes total (20 percent of the exam score). Question 1 uses secondary sources, Question 2 uses a primary source, and Question 3 uses a non-text source such as a graph or map. Each question has parts a, b, and c worth one point each, and a few precise sentences per part are enough.
  • Section II, Part A: the document-based question, 60 minutes (25 percent). College Board recommends spending the first 15 minutes reading the documents and planning. The question is scored on seven points: thesis, contextualization, evidence from the documents, outside evidence, sourcing, and complex understanding.
  • Section II, Part B: one long essay question, 40 minutes (15 percent). The question is scored on six points: thesis, contextualization, evidence, reasoning, and complex understanding.

Scoring your responses

Every task is a written response, so you score yourself. After you finish, compare your work with the rubric rows and the model answers, thesis, and evidence lists in the explanation. For each row ask whether your response did what the row requires, not whether it matches the model word for word. The explanations show one strong route; other accurate routes earn credit too. Record the rows where you lost points so you can practice those writing functions in your next timed set.

  • A single timer of 2 hr 20 min runs for the whole set.

Study mode

Study mode lets you answer each question at your own pace and shows the explanation as soon as you check your answer.

  • The 5 questions appear in a new order each session.
  • The explanation opens when you check each answer.
