(C) Explain how the decision in Mahanoy Area School District v. B. L. reflects the principle of limited government.

Mahanoy Area School District v. B. L. (2021), nonrequired case

A public high school student failed to make the varsity cheerleading squad. While away from school on a weekend, she posted vulgar criticism of the school and cheerleading program to a private social-media audience. The school suspended her from the junior varsity squad. The Supreme Court held that the punishment violated the First Amendment. The Court emphasized that schools may have authority over some off-campus speech, but the school's interests were insufficient in this case; the speech occurred off campus and did not cause the kind of substantial disruption associated with the rule in Tinker v. Des Moines.
