Abu'l-Fazl on Mughal imperial service, late sixteenth century

Abu'l-Fazl, an official and historian at the court of Akbar, described an imperial hierarchy in which officers held numerical ranks connected to their personal status and military obligations. Officials served at the emperor's appointment, and many received rights to collect revenue from assigned territories in return for service. Akbar drew imperial servants from a range of regional and religious backgrounds.
